UNISON
Our Brief
UNISON, the UK's largest public sector trade union sought to restore and re-develop the former Elizabeth Garrett Anderson hospital as a mixed-use development. The one-acre site would house UNISON national headquarters, 47 new homes and a museum commemorating the hospital's founder in addition to renewing the splendour of a listed Victorian masterwork that had suffered years of neglect. We were asked to manage the public consultation for this major regeneration on a sensitive and emotive site.
Activity
- Engaged with client and developer from the very beginning, to ensure the concept was 'right'.
- Organised two public exhibitions as part of public consultation process.
- Distributed 1,300 newsletters to local residents and ran local press campaign promoting the consultation.
- Gave presentation on the plans to local Development Control Forum.
- Further broadened public awareness by keeping key stakeholders among residents and council up to date.
Outcome
After winning backing from local residents, heritage groups and local ward councillors, planning permission was approved by Camden Council in February 2008. The plans went forward for formal approval from the Greater London Authority. UNISON General Secretary Dave Prentis said: 'We are delighted to have finally achieved planning consent. We are grateful to those who supported our proposals.'
