LANGNEY SHOPPING CENTRE CONSULTATION SUCCESS

LANGNEY SHOPPING CENTRE CONSULTATION SUCCESS

Hundreds of local people flocked to the Langney Centre on Tuesday 30th September to see Stockland’s development proposals which would give the shopping centre a new lease of life.

The overall response was one of strong support for the plans.  62% of feedback forms received on the day said the plans were ‘Very Good’ or ‘Good’.

Members of Stockland’s professional team manned the Quatro-led exhibition all day on Tuesday to answer questions about the plans, and the public exhibition will remain at the centre until Tuesday 14th October, together with freepost feedback forms for shoppers and residents to make their comments.

The proposals include:

• A new public library, three times the size of the existing Langney library;
• Three new shops, two at the west end of the centre next to Tesco and a new store for Wilkinson’s at the eastern end;
• A Mecca Bingo leisure unit;
• 28 new homes, eight of which will be above the new library, together with 20 new homes on Swanley Close which were given planning permission in 2005 under the previous owners’ proposals;
• A new landscaped public square area for the market and other events;
• New entrances to the shopping centre at both ends;
• Improved taxi and bus drop-off area;
• Reconfigured car park to improve safety for pedestrians.

Ken Lindsay, Managing Director at Stockland, said:

“We are delighted that hundreds of Langney residents and shoppers came to view the public exhibition on its first day and hope that many more will visit over the next fortnight.  Responses so far show that local people agree that the proposals will make the shopping centre more attractive and popular and the enhanced amenities will provide a number of community benefits.  I would encourage local people to see the plans for themselves at the Langney Centre, and look forward to receiving more comments soon.”
