ELEAN DATA CAMPUS RECEIVES WARM RECEPTION AT DATA CENTRE WORLD
Huge interest in Elean’s power- and cost-saving absorption cooling technology, providing rent-free space in 14 years.
Delegates at the 2010 Data Centre World conference were impressed that BNB Developments’ world-class data campus – the greenest in Europe – will offer the double financial benefits of low running costs and exemption from the carbon reduction commitment levy.
This double cost-saving makes Elean a very attractive proposition for companies looking for a state-of-the-art data centre with first-class green credentials, just 55 minutes from central London.
To lower electricity usage at Elean’s seven data centres, combined heat and power will be produced on site, ensuring a minimum electricity specification of 1500 watts per sq metre. It will also be supported by two independent grid supplies. Through absorption cooling at the adjacent power plant, the site’s electricity profile has been almost halved from an industry standard of 65MW to an actual maximum load of 34MW.
In his paper delivered to delegates of Data Centre World, BNB chairman Alex Arthur confirmed that tenants of the Elean Data Campus near Cambridge can expect to have their utility bills reduced by 27.5%, equal to a reduction in energy bills of £12.7m at today's costs. Thanks to the efficiency of the energy systems employed, tenants will also be exempt from the ‘carbon tax’ due to be introduced in April. He further stated that with taxing expected to open at £65 per carbon tonne, energy and carbon taxing savings would exceed total rent in 14 years.
Alex Arthur, chairman of BNB Developments, said:
“It has been great to meet people at the Data Centre World conference over the last couple of days, and we have had some interesting discussions. It is exciting to see that other share our passion for finding a greener data centre solution, and financial managers are excited to hear that the Elean Data Campus will offer not only a huge 27% discount on actual electricity consumption, but will also prevent tenants from paying a carbon reduction commitment charge.”

The Carbon Reduction Commitment
The new carbon reduction commitment will soon be introduced by the UK government on 1st April 2010.
Throughout 2008, the government audited large energy users (6,000 MW hours per year) and next year will issue proforma invoices for the CRC levy, which is calculated at £25.00 per carbon tonne. Local authorities currently charge carbon at £35.00 per tonne.
The charge will be fixed for two years, before the government opens up a carbon trading market. The EU looks keen to increase the CRC charge to £65-70 per carbon tonne from 2012.
The only way to avoid the levy is to reduce the amount of electricity used on site once the CRC is introduced, thereby making the massive energy savings offered by the Elean Data Campus a very attractive solution.
